History of The Schindler Banquet CenterFormerly Amos Hall, The Schindler Banquet Center once was the dining hall for the Ohio Soldiers and Sailors Orphange. In 1864, President Abraham Lincoln challenged Americans to help the orphans and widows of Civil War soldiers. Ohio members of the Grand Army of the Republic responded to that challenge. In 1869, a donation of 100 acres by a Xenia resident laid the groundwork for the Ohio Soldiers and Sailors Orphan Home. The Home was a self-contained community with a farm, dairy, hospital, dormitories, gymnasium, chapel, and banquet hall. During its 127-year operation, it served more than 13,000 children. The banquet center has since been re-born and is now more glorious than ever. In 1995, Greene County purchased the property from the State of Ohio. In 1998, Dayton Christian Schools saw an opportunity to consolidate and expand its Xenia Christian Campus. In 1999, the 253-acre complex was purchased by Legacy Ministries International, the umbrella organization created to own, operate, and manage the facility. As of January 2011, Athletes in Action, a division of Campus Crusade for Christ is the new owners of The Schindler Banquet Center. Ex-pupils from the campus still return to the campus annually for events and tours of renovations. Modern heating and air-conditioning have been installed, along with a fully-operational kitchen and serving area. New elevators and restrooms have been added, as well as a professional, full-service Audio Visual system to support the diverse multimedia needs of today's events. The new banquet hall serves not the ministries located at The Legacy Center, but also numerous events for the local communities. |
